Planning a Destination Wedding in Southern Italy

An honest guide to wedding photography, meaningful places and planning your celebration from abroad.

There is something special about bringing the people you love together in a place that matters to you.

Perhaps you are returning to the Italian town where your family comes from. Perhaps you have discovered a corner of Southern Italy that feels like the right place to begin a new chapter. Or perhaps your wedding is taking you somewhere completely different from home.

Whatever brings you here, the most important part of your wedding will always be the people, the connections and the moments you share.

We are Andrea and Teodora of Meraki Creative Studio, wedding photographers based in San Marco dei Cavoti, near Benevento, in Campania. We photograph weddings across Southern Italy, throughout the country and beyond.

This guide is our way of sharing what we have learned from photographing celebrations that bring together different places, cultures and families.

1. Start with the story, not just the destination

Italy offers extraordinary settings. But we believe a beautiful backdrop becomes truly meaningful when it belongs to your story.

For some couples, getting married in Italy means returning to their roots. For others, it means inviting friends and family to experience a place together for the first time.

Before thinking about photographs, ask yourselves what matters most about the celebration. Is it the atmosphere of an intimate ceremony? A gathering with relatives you rarely get to see? A day full of music, conversation and dancing?

Those answers will help shape the way your wedding is photographed.

2. Planning from abroad: the details that make a difference

Organising a wedding from another country involves coordinating people, places and schedules.

You do not need to have every detail finalised before contacting your photographers. A date or preferred period, an approximate location and an idea of the celebration are enough to begin a conversation.

It helps to know whether your preparations, ceremony and reception will take place in the same venue or in different locations. Travel between places, seasonal daylight and the timing of the ceremony can all influence the photographic coverage.

If you are working with a wedding planner, we can coordinate the photographic timeline with them and your other suppliers.

The legal and administrative aspects of getting married in Italy should be checked with the relevant authorities or qualified wedding professionals. Our role is to take care of your photographic story.

3. Leave space for the unexpected

Our approach is documentary, natural and discreet.

We photograph the preparations, the anticipation, the ceremony and the celebration, paying attention to the moments that unfold without direction: a hand held tightly, an unexpected laugh, a quiet exchange between family members.

We also make time for portraits of the two of you, but we do not believe your wedding should become a long photoshoot.

A focused portrait session, planned around the light and your schedule, can create beautiful images while leaving you free to enjoy the day with your guests.

If photography and film are both part of your plans, we discuss the coverage together so the two can complement each other.

4. Real weddings, different journeys

Canadians of Italian heritage, Giuliano and Barbara chose Villa Clermont in Vico Equense, overlooking the sea, for their wedding in August 2025.

Their celebration brought family together across the Atlantic. From an intimate first look to the ceremony and the warm light along the coast, their photographs tell a story that belongs equally to the couple and to the people around them.

Angelo and Alice live in Switzerland but come from San Marco dei Cavoti. In August 2024, they returned to celebrate their wedding among familiar streets, family and friends.

Their story continued beyond the wedding day with an additional portrait session among the archaeological remains of Altilia, where ancient stone, light and movement gave the photographs a different atmosphere.

Giovanni's roots are in the Benevento area, while Cristina comes from Sicily. Their wedding took place in Canicattì, near Agrigento.

We followed their celebration beyond Campania, with photographs that also took them to the Valle dei Templi and the coastal landscape of Punta Bianca.

Their story reflects another important part of our work: wherever a wedding takes place, we want to tell it with the same personal attention.

5. Photography and film: what should you discuss before booking?

Can you plan everything while living abroad?

Yes. We can begin by talking remotely about your date, locations and the way you imagine your wedding.

Do you photograph weddings outside Campania?

Yes. We are based near Benevento and travel for weddings throughout Italy and abroad. Travel arrangements and any related expenses are included in the personalised proposal.

Do you offer photography and wedding films?

We provide wedding photography and film services. The team, coverage, deliverables, albums and any additional services are discussed according to your plans.

When should we get in touch?

As soon as you have a preferred date and a possible location. Even if some details are still open, we can start by checking availability.

6. Your wedding should feel like yours

A destination wedding is not simply about travelling somewhere beautiful. It is about choosing a place in which to share something personal.

Our role is to be attentive without interrupting, to photograph the landscape without losing sight of the people, and to preserve the moments that will matter when you return home.

If you are planning a wedding in Campania, Southern Italy or elsewhere, we would love to hear your story.
