Other people’s hands

September 14, 2024 begins indoors, with people gathering around Salvatore and Maria Rita. Someone adjusts a tie, someone fastens a cuff, someone helps with the dress and veil. We stay with these hands, and with the embraces that interrupt the preparations. In the mirrors, the rooms open up to reveal another part of the day.

Two crowns and a fan among the pews

The church doorway frames Maria Rita’s entrance. Inside, we follow the rings, the crowns placed on the couple’s heads and the faces of those beside them. A child smiles with a fan in his hand: we keep that moment alongside the gestures of the ceremony. Then the doors open again. Rice fills the air and the guests’ raised arms enter the frame.

The celebration starts in the street

Before the reception, there are ribbons to cut and glasses meeting outside the houses. People gather around the couple, someone opens a bottle, and confetti changes the scene. Further on, the view opens onto the hills and balloons appear. We keep these moments together in the story: the celebration has already found its rhythm.

A low wall and a whole sky

The portraits move between different distances. First comes the reflection in the pool, then the low sun behind the hills. We move close to Salvatore and Maria Rita, to their hands and faces, and widen the frame again as clouds fill the sky. Above the low stone wall, they become two small figures. There is no need to fill every part of the frame: that sky belongs in the photographs too.

Raised arms, all the way to the fireworks

In the evening, we return to the crowd. Salvatore lifts a little girl, guests make an arch with their arms, and embraces continue between dances. Ribbons stretch out from the bouquet; sparklers arrive by the cake. We end with Salvatore and Maria Rita seen from behind, standing close as they watch the fireworks. After all that movement, they stay like that for a moment.
