The sign says “Beware of cats”
There is a sign by the entrance: “Beware of cats”. Then you look at the photographs and find dogs, beside Veronica or between the legs of people getting ready. June 2, 2024 starts like this, moving from room to room, between a tie being adjusted and a veil by the window. We like these beginnings: mirrors make the rooms feel wider, someone steps into the frame to help, a kiss comes while the dress is still being put on.
A place beneath the chairs, too
The ceremony takes place outdoors, beneath the pergola. Pale drapes frame the scene, but it is the faces that hold our attention: Lester and Veronica’s, and those watching from the front rows. Someone reads, someone smiles without taking their eyes off them, and a dog has found a place beneath the chairs. As they walk out, everyone gathers closer, confetti fills the air and, for a moment, the frame holds it all.
Steps, trees and a bend in the path
For the portraits, we follow the garden. Steps lead the eye, leaves hide part of the scene, then the path bends and Lester and Veronica become small figures in the greenery. We move between these wider views and their faces and hands. Some photographs show the whole scene; in others, two silhouettes beneath a tree are enough.
The music finds its way into the crowd
A voice, a violin, a guitar: the music enters the photographs along with the people dancing. We move through the crowd, look for reflections and change our viewpoint; from above, even a child among the chairs becomes a scene worth keeping. The red-fruit cake appears beneath branches hanging down towards the table. Then darkness comes, leaving faces lit by sparklers, with Lester and Veronica in the middle of everyone.
